About
Trained volunteers from Tulane and Loyola Universities teach water safety skills, and basic swimming skills so that all children may have greater confidence in the water.
Lessons are held on Sundays with two 8-week sessions per year.
The organization currently holds lessons once a week at Reily Recreational Center at Tulane University. Currently 45 active volunteers provide swimming lessons to 45 children per semester.
Mission
To unite volunteerism and community resources to provide free swimming lessons to low-income youth and to ensure that every low-income child has the opportunity and available resources to learn the life-saving skill of swimming.
Vision
By providing youth with life skills through swimming, Swim 4 Success empowers youth and enables them to become agents of change in their own communities.
History
Fifteen-year-old Laura White, a resident of Alpharetta, Georgia, founded Swim 4 Success (previously Wild and Water Swimming, Inc.) in 2005.
After she rescued five inner-city children from drowning during a community-sponsored outing to a local lake, Laura realized the lack of access to swimming lessons for economically disadvantaged children.
In July 2006, Laura and her swim team friends, coaches, and swim parents began organizing volunteers to teach swimming lessons, collecting donations and equipment, and choosing pool locations in the Atlanta area.
The organization became so successful that it expanded the program to the New Orleans area in 2008.
Swim 4 Success held its first lesson in New Orleans in March 2009.
Since 2006, the program has taught over 200 children how to swim.
Future Goals and Objectives
Swim 4 Success plans to expand its program by creating a model that will be used at other universities to establish new branches of the organization.
Expansion throughout the New Orleans area is the organization's priority, in the long term, Swim 4 Success also plans to expand throughout Louisiana.
